OLD WOMAN LOOKED AT ME

The Old Woman looked at me
puzzled
and asked
Why do you ignore
your grandmothers?
They miss you
and their grandmothers ask them
why you do not love
your own
spirits
And so I told her
I do not know them
Their language
is denied me
Their customs
have been buried
They live
in another place
and I
was born here
am connected here
The Old Woman smiled
and said
but you know language
does not matter
in that other place
and what has been buried
will always
resurface
I could only trust her
as I had always trusted her
and
when you trust
you trust all the way
and I am waiting
